Harsh chemical cleaners are not your only option for removing tough toilet stains. Try this natural alternative that will leave your bowl sparkling without harmful toxins. This homemade solution even fizzes like the store-bought variety!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Glass bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Baking soda
  • Disinfecting essential oils
  • Glass jar
  • White vinegar
  • Toilet brush

To Make It

Add two cups of baking soda and one teaspoon of a disinfecting essential oil, such as orange, pine, lavender, tea tree oil or any combination of thereof in a glass bowl. Mix with a wooden spoon into a smooth powder. Don’t add the vinegar just yet as it could cause a chemical reaction. We’ll get to the vinegar in a moment. Note: A glass bowl and wooden spoon is specified because the ingredients can deteriorate metal and plastic.

To Store It

Store the powder in a sealable glass jar and keep out of the bathroom when not in use. Moisture can cause clumping and adversely affect the ingredients.

To Clean With It

Drop one tablespoon of the powder mix into the bowl and let settle to the bottom. Sprinkle it around the perimeter, as well. Use your toilet brush to spread the powder around. Next, pour ½ cup of vinegar into the bowl. Note: This recipe calls for 20% white vinegar, which is a horticultural product and a little harder to come by. Alternatively, you can use 5% white vinegar, just be sure to up the quantity to 2 cups.

The vinegar should create a fizzing reaction with the essential oil-infused baking soda. Now, thoroughly scrub the bowl and let sit for about 15 minutes. Then flush and you’re done!
